about

Moody, reflective, sonically sparse jazz, peppered with clave, pizzicato violins, and an afterthought of flugelhorn.
Rajasthan India. Its 45degrees celcius, and I'm stuck to the cheap mattress like a banana on hot pavement, watching the fan above my head spinning 2 agonizing rotations per minute. Into my head wafts a chord progression, so I peel myself from sweat wet sheets and pick up the guitar. 10 minutes, and 2 verses later, the song was well on its way to being a song.
One year later, sitting in the Hoito restaurant in Thunder Bay Canada, whilst musing over the fact that this song only has 2 verses, and following the suggestion from friend Sue Watson, that a introspective final verse was required, the 3rd verse crept into existence.

lyrics

Sidewalks & raindrops
Stolen glances from behind
Wet window pane.
And the thin man in the overcoat looks
Underloved and overworked
Has he ever been happy?
The lines on his face etch a sad story.

Sidewalks & Raindrops

Blinkin’ neon and buzzin’ Freon
Tired glances from behind
Stained coffee cups.
And the waitress in powder blue looks wilted
Her manufactured smile, slightly jaded
Has she ever been happy?
The lines around her eyes paint a sad story.

Sidewalks & Raindrops

The fan above my head keeps spinnin’ and I
can’t help wonderin’ have I?
Have I ever been happy?
The lines that I write here right now….
Tell a sad story.
